Paint Help!

Hi Friends- Would love your help/thoughts on this one!

This is our family room in the new house. We had originally planned to paint the brink fireplace and built  in cabinets white but now I'm thinking it's going to be too much white and not look right.  What do you all think? Paint it all? Paint only the cabinets? Paint only the fireplace?
We are having professionals do it so I want to make sure we get it right. We are keeping the wall color the same for now and just touching up the trim. The gold fireplace doors are coming off and the fan will eventually get changed.
The tv over the fireplace is staying (the previous owner left it for us!! For FREE!) I don't love TVs over the fireplace but I'm not moving that one and I think it is the best place for it for now.

We painted the fireplace white in our current house and I feel like it makes such a difference but we also don't have built ins.  Here is our current fireplace before and after:

What do you all think?? Thanks!

  1. I think I white or a white wash look is going to be nice. (Our house we are buying, the owner is leaving the TV too! LOL)

  2. Paint it!!!! I once painted a gigantic brick fireplace white and I never regretted it. If you can find the wall color, you could paint the built ins the wall color and the fireplace white. That may set them apart a little, but I think all white would be just fine!!! You could also leave the built-ins and mantle the wood color and just paint the bricks. So many options. Good luck!

  3. I responded on Insta, but Ill write here too. I think all white would totally work. It's such a clean look. OR you could do lighter gray (with chalk paint) for the built ins next to the white fire place. I also like the idea of putting some kind of wall paper or decorative paper in the backs of the bookshelves to make them pop, especially if you did all white. I think it'll look great whatever you do!

  4. I think the white built-ins would be perfect!! Maybe do a white wash with the brick fireplace? I love the all white look because you can bring color in with accessories if you really want to.

  5. I think white will be so pretty – white always just brings such a clean and classy vibe. I’m not a fan of TV’s on the wall either unless they are above the fireplace – that’s one look I do like – so nice they are leaving it for you!

  6. I think painting them all white would be beautiful! My in-laws' house is like that and with all of the accessories and art on the cabinets, it doesn't look weird at all. :)

  7. I'm thinking paint all white, or maybe white wash the brick. How cool would it be to do a planked wall over the built ins too!?

  8. Paint both! I think the white with the tall ceilings would make the room so light and airy. Once you fill the room with furniture and accents it won't feel so stark.

  9. I think you should definitely paint both white. I know it seems like it will be a lot, but you can add your visual contrast through your furniture, since we all know light furniture plus children is a rough combo ;)

  10. Do you follow the blog Newlyweds:North (it's on my blog roll at the very end). She is rehabbing a house and she ended up putting two coats of primer on her fireplace and I loved the look. It broke up the overly white feeling and still left a lot of character. You should check it

  11. We did white built ins around our red fireplace and then instead of painting the brick white, I whitewashed it & loved the result! It gave the fireplace more of a gray look and it still had lots of definition. I think it could be the happy medium for you all in that room. 12. Even if you did go white, you could paint the insides a dark shade of something like the walls or a dark gray maybe? That's a tricky one but I'm sure it will look great when you're all finished, girl!

  13. *Insides of the built-ins ;)

  14. I'm no designer ha! But what about painting the fireplace a dark gray with white shelves? Or vice versa? Although, I don't know if you can ever have enough white.

  15. I think the white fireplace would look great! Then you could use pops of color in the decor.

  16. Love reading your blog! I think the fireplace and built ins would look great painted white. I think it will make your room appear even larger. You could think about adding a natural colored grass cloth paper to the back of the shelves.

  17. I'm a sucker for white always, so I can't talk... ;) But white on white or white on whitewash for the brick! Either one! xx

  18. Just re-did my whole living in my new (but very old in age) home. We had an ugly fireplace and dark wood built ins. We painted them all white and I LOVE how it turned out. We also painted the walls gray too, which looks like the theme you have going on. My instagram has pix (@jrog218) (I'm not public b/c I'm a teacher and don't want my students finding me but I'm happy to friend you.)

  19. I definitely think you should paint the shelves and the fireplace. White is just a clean classic color. Good luck!

  20. Whitewashed brick would look really nice I think! I can't wait to see what y'all do with it :)

  21. I love the idea of white or a mix of gray and white (white fireplace gray bookshelves or vice versa)! Although the red brick and wood is very traditional! I guess it depends on what your going for - can't wait to see what you do!

  22. I just sent you a direct message on Instagram with a picture of what you're looking to do. Definitely go with all white. :)

  23. The brick totally needs to be painted. How do you feel about gray tones? You could totally pull off a nice gray if you decided to repaint the walls. Also if you go with a light gray you could pull of a nautical blue on the cabinets and shelving. I was in on a job where they did the brick black a few months ago....that can look good but for your room I'd stay away from dark colors. It seems smaller and narrow and you need to keep it looking large. I just envision a big mirror in that room. Well you have me sitting here drawing out ideas for your room....LOL thanks! Haha xo Amanda

  24. Paint them both! Definitely white on the built-ins. Then use pops of color in the accents you put on the shelves or you could do a color (or patterned) back in them - either with paint or wallpaper. And if you don't want all white on the fireplace, what about a whitewash, that leaves some of the brick color? I can't wait to see how it turns out!

  25. I would paint them both....you could always paint the back of the bookcases a darker shade to make them pop.

  26. I think all white on both will look great! You can add color either behind the shelves or with whatever you put on the shelves!
