I've been thinking about going a bit darker with my hair color. Every fall I say this and then I walk in and completely chicken out and just go super blonde. I was always very blonde as a child but as I've gotten older I've had to maintain that blonde color (like most blondes) with the help of highlights. Over the past year I've been trying to darken my blonde and move away from the platinum look that I rocked for many years.
This year but hair feels so blah that I think I need something new and fresh. I'm leaning toward a light caramel color with highlights. I think this will help blend my roots and keep me from needing to go every 6-8 weeks for a highlight. I keep reminding myself that it's only hair and if I completely freak out and think it's too dark I can just add more highlights back in but it still makes me so nervous!!
Here are some of my inspiration photos:
So what do you all think? Any blondes out there have advice for going darker? Anyone have any advice for me to make sure I get a good caramel color with good highlights that look natural? Any other blondes like me and totally chicken out about going darker?

Blake Lively has the BEST hair, ever. I think that color would be perfect for the Fall!
ReplyDeleteMy hair chick put too many low lights in last time, or so I thought, and I came home kind of freaking out. But then it faded some and now I love it. Just get her to add in some low lights so it'll be a bit darker but not so dark you're scared to look in the mirror!
ReplyDeleteI always go through this phase every fall! I love the look of the caramel color like LC's hair in the last photo. Of course, it looks a lot better if your are tan, wear make up and curl it everyday. It's those days that I don't do my make up and am feeling pale that the darker color makes me feel 'blah'... But I say go for it!
ReplyDeleteBlake Lively's hair is pure perfection, but I love LC's hair in that last picture!
ReplyDeleteBlake and LC's hair are perfect and I the colors would look great on you as well!
ReplyDeletei love blakes hair! you'd look great with a darker blonde color. xo jillian - cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteI went darker gold/blonde about 8 months ago and it's been so great for maintenance. I can go so much longer between highlights, which is great when you're busy. The grown out look is much less severe. To transition more slowly, we did lowlights and highlights, so I still had that blonde but with more gold and light brown woven in. Try a little first and then if you like it, add more. Or go for it and you can always add in more blonde highlights if you're not happy. My girl also does something called a breakbase between highlights to stretch it out. It's an allover color that she puts on the roots to lighten them up so the transition between new hair and highlighted isn't as severe. Without it, I absolutely have to highlight every 8 weeks but with it, I usually try to go 10-12.
ReplyDeleteI love your inspiration pics & think your hair would look great that color! My favorites are Blake Lively & Lauren Conrad - they both have gorgeous hair!

Ooh do it! Agree that LC's color is perfect.
ReplyDeleteI think at first it might be a surprise but that you'll grow to love how much easier it is to maintain (especially once #2 arrives). I always like to add in more low lights in the fall to make my hair look and feel healthier!
ReplyDeleteI think darker for fall would look great and be easier to keep up with the maintenance which will be nice once the baby is born.
ReplyDeleteWait!! I couldn't even tell you weren't a natural blonde (and usually it's obvious when people go blonde). I do love the looks posted above - but seriously I'm still surprised I didn't know you dyed your hair already!
ReplyDeletePlaying with different hair colors is always so fun, I went lighter last summer and have continued to play around with shades and love being able to switch it up even just to make the tiniest difference. Love all the pics you have for inspiration, I think it will look great!
ReplyDeleteLove all these hair colors!

Love Blake and LC's color! I keep mine a bit of a darker caramel color with natural looking highlights. I usually only do highlights every other time I get it colored and my stylist always uses a toner when she's done both color and highlights. I'm by no means a hair professional, but I always feel the toner really helps to give me the caramel shade I'm wanting and the natural looking highlights. It's as if it blends it all together and makes the highlight more subtle.
ReplyDeleteDO IT. It will look amazing!
ReplyDeleteIt's fall and it's not permanent! I say go for it just start out subtly!
ReplyDeleteI suffer from severe blonderexia but like to take it darker from time to time. Unfortunately, it always ends up too dark when I do and then it's just a hot mess. Apparently going from blonde to dark is hard for stylists? I recommend adding in some lowlights mixed with highlights and go more gradually!
ReplyDeleteThis post has helped me for an article which I am writing. Thank you for giving me another point of view on this topic. Now I can easily complete my article. Cheers ideas hair
